The Pet Works History

The Pet Works Longview WashingtonOnce upon a time there was a store in downtown Longview called Joe’s Jungle.  It was located right next to the Columbia Theatre.  It grew into it’s new location at 1257 Commerce Avenue.  In 1975 it was sold to Ron and Joan Works who thought it would be clever to change the name to The Pet Works.  And so it goes...

The Pet Works became a staple business for Longview and its surrounding areas.  People traveled far and wide to see The Pet Works and “George” The Pet Works’ monkey.  George was part of the claim to fame that The Pet Works shouldered.

George needed to find a new home and was sent to a monkey sanctuary in 1990.  The Pet Works is still known today as a store with the pet monkey.

Because The Pet Works is located in historic downtown Longview, it boasts old school appeal with wooden floors, bulk seed barrels, oversized front display windows, and an approach to customer service that comes from traditional pet store backgrounds.

In 2004 The Pet Works ran independent of the owners and Rebecca Smith became manager.  She had worked at the Longview Petstore since 1994.  Within a year she purchased the store from Ron and Joan, and kept many of the same staff members.  In 2006 Rebecca married Eric Smith and The Pet Works became a true family-run-business.

In late 2008 The Pet Works purchased a second store in Astoria, Oregon.  This Astoria Petstore was previously known as Riverside Pet.  Now it is The Pet Works, Astoria.  It is located in the historic downtown Astoria.

With over 50 years of pet experience The Pet Works staff is truly a dedicated and knowledgeable group of professionals.

Rebecca @ The Pet Works, Longview & Astoria

Hi!  My name is Rebecca Smith.  I have been part of The Pet Works’ family for 15 years.  I started with the original owners and grew into managing it for them.  In July of 2004, I purchased the store to make a great life for my daughter, Anna, and I.

My number one passion is to take the best care of pets.  Pets add such an enormouse amount to my daily life.  I feel truly blessed to be able to sit with puppies, hold newly hatched birds, and cuddle darling baby bunnies.  Everything else that I do at our stores, doesn’t even compare to this joy.

My passion as far as pets go would have to be aquatic plants.  I don’t think that there is anything more beautiful than a fish tank full of plants and brilliant little tetras.

We have four quirky little dogs in our home.  It is never boring!!!  Mr. Noodles, Foster, Rocky and Izzy definitely rule the roost!!

Matt @The Pet Works, Longview

Hello, my name is Matt and I am the manager at The Pet Works, Inc. in Longview, Washington.  I have been a part of The Pet Works family now for 6 years.  I have been in the customer service business since I was 16-years-old and enjoy working with the public.  One of the most rewarding parts of my job, besides working with animals, is have repeat customers that come back just for MY help.  It’s a great feeling.

My favorite types of animals are Axolotls, marine fishes and cephalopods.  I have four cats (Paul, Sammy, Rosie and Chester), a cockatiel and a 55 gallon freshwater tank with a lima shovelnose catfish, vampire tetra, silver arowana, spotted gar and gold tiger datniod.  I am setting up a 150 gallon tank to transfer all the fish into.

Rhonda @ The Pet Works, Longview

Hello, I'm Rhonda, the animal technician for The Pet Works.  I've been working here going on 18 years.  After working here for nine years I put myself through collage and earned an associates degree as a veterinarian assistant.  I then returned to The Pet Works after realizing this was the place I still wanted to work.  I love the people I work with, our customers and taking care of the animals.  I take care of all the small animals (hamsters, rats, gerbils, etc.), puppies, birds and reptiles (yes, even the cold blooded legless ones).  At home, my personal joy is my Dachshund Nickie.  He has been with me for 13 years!  I hope you can come and see us soon.

Sarah @The Pet Works, Longview & Astoria

Hey guys! My name is Sarah and I have been with The Pet Works family for two and a half years. I love working here not only because I get to work with animals, but because I get to help customers find what they are looking for. When a customer is happy because I helped him/her find just what they were looking for, it makes my day. Also being able to share knowledge with a customer or have them share something with me that I didn't know is awesome. Just working here has been a whole new learning experience for me.

My favorite section has to be the small animal section. I just love playing with the baby rats and getting them ready to move into a new & loving home. It's probably why I have ended up with so many of them as pets of my own. I currently have two rats (BJ & Spazz), two cats (Oz & Baby), a twelve gallon tropical tank, and an axolotl tank.
